Having fun with queries

The name of the

U.S. President who succeeded George Bush drew a hush. When a Pakistani cricketer’s visual was shown, there was no room for doubt.

Enthusiastic participation by the audience was the highlight of the Kozhikode regional of The Hindu- Young World Quiz-07 held at the Tagore Centenary Hall on Saturday. Students eagerly grabbed the mike from officials when questions were posed to the audience.

But the session that dealt with answering the questions of the preliminary written test was the most exciting. Some of the questions were easy, touching on mythology, a few on Kozhikode and its history and contemporary issues. The first one began in an appropriate way. It was “Which lovable God is also called Kapila meaning Yellowish Brown coloured?” Many had Lord Ganesha on their lips. But Gautam Prakash of Rani Public School at Vadakara was lucky to give the maiden answer.

The next one was “which place’s present name is a modified versions for the word hen of truth”. Another was “who was Mrs. Ravana?” Many got the answers wrong for “what is a called a semi enclosed coastal body of water with a free connection to open sea?”

A clue about her former husband helped students to come out with the answer on who won the latest national award for best actress for work in Parzania.

Another interesting question was on the bard in Asterix comics. None gave the right answer to the question on the complete name of US President who succeeded George Bush.

Almost everyone had in their minds the answer to the company founded by Paul Allen. Nearly all hands went up when the picture of Pakistani cricketer Imran Nazir was shown on screen. But many went wrong when asked “In Harry Potter, which spell causes objects to swell and become bigger in size?” One Pottermaniac rightly said “Engorgio.”

Similarly many were confused about “the Asian nation, often in news to have the URL extension .kp?” But everyone knew who gave Rabindra Tagore the epithet “Gurudev.”
