A new forum of elephant-lovers will upload details of domesticated elephants in the State

KOCHI: A brief history of the nearly 1,000 domesticated elephants and their pictures in the State will soon be available on the worldwide web thanks to the efforts of Kerala Elephant Owners’ Federation, a newly-formed organisation of elephant-lovers.

K.B. Ganesh Kumar, chairman of the federation said that work to upload these details was on and the web site would soon be launched.

Solving issues

The federation had its formation meeting in the city on Saturday. Mr. Ganesh Kumar said that the organisation aimed at addressing issues facing elephants and their owners. The organisation, he said, would bring under its umbrella the smaller forums formed in different districts to address issues on a common platform.

The federation hopes to bring about a code of conduct for elephant-owners in the State, said Babu Namboodiri, cine artiste and an elephant-lover and owner. Mr. Ganesh Kumar said that about 250 elephant-owners turned up at the meeting. Nearly 200 of them expressed willingness to join the federation, he said.

Better health facilities

The new organisation will join hands with research bodies, veterinarians and elephant-lovers to provide better health care for these animals used widely in temple and church festivals.
