TIRUVANNAMALAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is working to ensure job opportunities for all educated youth across the State by 2011, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami has said.

He was participating in a function at S. Vaalavatti near here on Saturday.

The Minister said that Mr. Karunanidhi had chalked out plans whereby 15 lakh unemployed youth would get jobs by 2011.

There were 16 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across the State, which helped to generate jobs for the youths. For instance, the SEZ at Hosur has employed 50,000 people. The SEZs to be started in Perambalur and Virudhanagar would provide jobs for 30,000 and 40,000 people respectively, Mr. Veeraswami said.

Even the State had provided infrastructure to generate 30,000 MW of power through private initiatives.

The company short-listed would provide jobs to 60,000 people. The State would generate 30,000 MW of power as part of its contribution to overcome the power deficiency faced by the country, he said.

As per statistics, a total of 1.24 lakh villages in the country were without power. The country should generate one lakh MW of power to meet the requirement, Mr. Veeraswami said.

As it was difficult to meet the demand owing to the huge cost, the State had decided to contribute to the deficiency. Tamil Nadu had succeeded in providing power supply to all villages across the State, Mr. Veeraswami said.

On the benefits extended to Electricity Board staff, Mr. Veeraswami said that in the Distribution Division, the government had decided to regularise the posts of 21,000 employees, who had been working as contract labourers.

Six thousand employees had been made permanent and the remaining would be made permanent next year.

The government had declared 20 per cent bonus for the Board staff and salary was increased by 40 per cent. Tamil Nadu had become self-sufficient in the power sector and was selling power to States such as Punjab and Maharashtra, Mr. Veeraswami said.

To enhance power supply across the State, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, immediately after assuming office in 2006, got the financial sanction to purchase 14,000 transformers.

Out of the proposed number of transformers, 10,000 were purchased in June this year. The remaining would be purchased by December, Mr. Veeraswami said.

To demands put forth by MLAs for setting up sub-stations at their respective constituencies, the Minister said all the demands would be fulfilled by April next.

Earlier, he distributed welfare assistance and inaugurated a sub-station at Nallavan Palayam set up at a cost of Rs. 3 crore.

He also inaugurated 33/11 KV sub-station at Valavatti, a hostel for the Backward Class students and a building for Milk Producers’ Co-operative Society. He also inaugurated 10 new bus routes.

Food Minister E.V. Velu said that the low voltage problem in Tiruvannamalai had been solved with Mr. Veeraswami sanctioning a total of 608 transformers for the district. Over 1.32 lakh farmers were beneficiaries under the free power supply scheme, he added.

MLAs K. Pitchandi, R. Sivanantham, P.S. Vijaya Kumar and Polur Varadan and District Revenue Officer K. Tamarai were present. Venugopal, Tirupattur MP, and district chairman M.P. Giri spoke.
