Belgaum
Belgaum: Senior Congress leader H.K. Patil, who is Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, has said that although the number of MLAs supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party-Janata Dal (Secular) combine formed a majority in the House, the combination could not be treated as an alternative government. He told The Hindu here on Saturday that after the coalition collapsed, both the parties had submitted letters demanding the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly. The Congress had also demanded the same. Therefore, there was no scope for Governor Rameshwar Thakur to explore the possibility of an alternative government. Reinstating the same BJP-JD(S) combination could not be called an alternative government, he said. Silent beneficiaryWhen asked whether the Congress was a “silent beneficiary” of the ongoing tussle for power, Mr. Patil said the Congress was emerging as a more “sane” party in the minds of the people. The people were refusing to accept such disgraceful behaviour, particularly by the BJP, he said.
