HAMPI: Hampi Utsav, a three-day mega cultural festival of dance, music and drama, got off to a colourful start, at the world famous Hampi, the erstwhile seat of Vijayanagar empire, on Saturday. However, the usual buzz was missing as this was for the first time that the utsav was being held without the participation of the Chief Minister and other Ministers and there were no movement of VVIP vehicles. Mr. Krishna, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, inaugurated the extravaganza by torching a light and offering flowers to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari at the Sri Krishna Devaraya Vedike, in the absence of Governor Rameshwar Thakur. AbsenceExcept for M.P.Prakash, former Minister and a connoisseur of art and music, who was instrumental in organising the cultural festival on a grand scale, Virupakshappa, Koppal MP; K.S.L. Swamy, MLC; Pushparekha, president of Bellary Zilla Panchayat, were conspicuous by their absence. The guests were accorded a warm traditional “poorna kumbh” welcome near the Virupaksha temple and were brought to the stage in a procession that was led to the accompaniment of the traditional band. Mr. Krishna expressed concern over the reports of Hampi becoming the base for terrorists, large-scale encroachments near the monument and illegal activities in the world heritage site. He said this was tarnishing the image of Hampi as a world tourist destination. Mr. Prakash, who was the chief guest, read out the message of the Governor. He said that a master plan was ready for the implementation for the systematic development of Hampi.
