PUDUKOTTAI: The Pudukottai Municipality will go in for privatisation of maintenance of streetlights due to lack of manpower.
A decision to this effect was taken at an emergency meeting of the council held here on Friday after a number of councillors complained about the poor maintenance of streetlights in their wards.
Replying to a complaint by the councillors, Municipal Commissioner S. Sithick said with the administrative expenditure exceeding the prescribed norms, the scope for appointment of additional employees for the maintenance of streetlights was remote.
The State government had permitted a few municipalities to go in for privatisation of maintenance of streetlights. A similar proposal would be taken up in Pudukottai too.
Mosquito menace
Chairperson Ramathilgam Udayappan, who presided over the meeting, assured the councillors that steps would be taken to check mosquito menace.
S. Pazhaniappan (CPI) said steps should be taken to collect tax arrears from members of the public.
M. Mohan (Congress) wanted the re-laying of Pudhunagar Road.
