BHUBANESWAR: Some of the convicts undergoing life imprisonment in different jails across the State have reasons to celebrate during coming diwali in a different state of mind. State Sentence Review Board (SSRB) on Saturday recommended release of 49 lifers. The SSRB headed by Home Secretary Tarun Kanti Mishra examined crime and life history of 94 jail inmates case by case and kept matters of 45 inmates on hold. Of the 45 jail inmates, a few were rejected while several others could not be considered due to lack of certificates, which were to be signed by respective district collectors and superintendent of police. “All these cases are reviewed on individual basis. Aspects like conduct of inmates in jail, their socio-economic background and circumstances leading them to commit crime were discussed,” Mr. Mishra said. A few of them were considered on ground of their falling health. Final decision awaitedHe said the cases of left-out inmates would be examined in a phase manner. The recommendations of SSRB would be sent to law department for further examinations and ultimately to Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare for his assent, State Home Secretary said. Of 49 luckier jail inmates, 28 prisoners belong scheduled tribe and eight others are from scheduled caste community. If all names got through the Raj Bhawan, then they would be released on occasion of forthcoming Republic Day. The SSRB meeting was attended by Inspector General of Police (Prison) V. Thiagarajan and Inspector General of Police (Crime Branch) Bijay Kumar Sharma.
