Storage level in dams remains static

Staff Reporter

THENI: Despite sizable inflow and moderate showers, storage level in Periyar and Vaigai dams, major drinking water and irrigation sources for the district, have remained static on Saturday as Public Works Department officials have stepped up quantum of withdrawal more than the total quantum of inflow.

However, inflow into Periyar dam did not increase much, thanks to moderate rain in the catchments.

Periyar dam has received 1,778 cusecs of water and the discharge from the dam was 1,867 cusecs meant for power generation and irrigation purposes.

Water level stood at 136.30 feet, 0.30 feet higher than the prescribed level in Periyar dam. Storage was 6,194 mcft. Excess water has been drained into Idukki through 13-vent spillway.

Inflow and discharge have been increased considerably in Vaigai dam owing to moderate rain in the catchments and copious flow in Vaigai, Kottakudi and Mullaperiyar rivers.

But water level remained at 66.11 feet, as withdrawal was higher than the inflow.

Inflow into the dam was 1,778 cusecs and the discharge was 1,870 cusecs. Storage was 3,148 mcft.

First flood warning was issued two days ago when the level touched 66 feet.

Despite comfortable storage in these two major drinking sources, acute water crisis hit several villages and towns along river borders owing to inundation of supply wells that were situated on the riverbed.

Already paddy crops in thousands of acres were inundated in the Cumbum valley.

Rainfall recorded at various places in mm: Periyar 27, Thekkadi 28, Goodalur 15.2, Uthapalayam 36, Shanmuganadhi dam 7, Veerapandi 3 and Vaigai 9.

Dindigul

Intermittent showers affected routine life in Dindigul and neighbouring areas since Saturday morning.

Worst affected were the school children.

This rain would be very useful for perennial and horticulture crops, said farmers.

Agriculturists in the rain-fed areas have started preliminary work to raise dry crops.
