Drive soon for reflective strips on all vehicles

From November 12 enforcement will begin

HYDERABAD: The Transport Department will launch a drive to ensure that all vehicles in the State were fitted with reflective strips across the front and back and also see that every headlight had deflectors on them so that they do not dazzle vehicles coming in the opposite direction.

At a press conference here on Saturday, Transport Commissioner Poonam Malakondaiah said there were provisions in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. Fitment of reflectors was prescribed in Rule 104 and deflection of lights was stipulated in Rule 106, she said.

Between November 5 and 12, an awareness campaign would be taken up in every district with the help of voluntary action groups locally. “From November 12, enforcement will start. We will not simply fine them and move on. When special teams detain vehicles, they will slap a strip of reflective tape with a width of 20 mm and above, across the width of the body. Likewise, black paint will be used to block the top half of headlights found without shades or deflectors,”.

The one month-old drive on road safety and feedback from road users had shown how drivers were either unable to see vehicles parked by the roadside or were blinded by the dazzle of headlights crossing them.
