NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia in association with the External Affairs Ministry will be organising an international seminar on “Prospects of Peace in West Asia” later this month. Many eminent sociologists, political economists, academics and journalists are expected to attend the event from November 19 to 21. Those who are expected to present papers during the seminar include Arab Thought Forum secretary-general Wissam Al Zahawie; editor of “Daily Star” of Lebanon Rami Khouri; Damascus University Professor Sadik Al Azm; Palestinian sociologist Jamal Hilal; University of Jordan Associate Professor Faisal Odeh Al-Rfouh. “Since the past six decades never have the prospects for peace in West Asia looked as bleak as today. From our stand-point the West Asian region encompasses countries from Morocco to Afghanistan and the Gulf region. It is further enriched by the contiguous lands of Central Asia and Africa which are linked with it by ties of religion, ethnicity, language and culture. West Asia is fast becoming a ‘theatre of wars and armed conflicts’ in the contemporary times. The region has witnessed a series of military conflicts involving both state and non-state actors,” said Jamia media coordinator Rakshanda Jalil.
