MADURAI: Tiruvadavur and Tiruvedagam villages in Madurai district have been identified for the implementation of ‘Rural Tourism’ project of the Union Ministry of Tourism. To attract foreign tourists to Indian villages, the Ministry has asked State governments to send a list of villages with potential for developing tourism from each district. The villages are chosen by the district administration and State Tourism Department.
“If these places get sanction, a sum of around Rs.50 lakh will be released from the Union Ministry for upgrading the infrastructure in these villages,” says K. Dharmaraj, Tourist Officer.
Some of the other places likely to be considered at a later stage include Tirumogur, Keezhakuyilkudi and the Gandhi Niketan Ashram at T. Kallupatti. Care will be taken to ensure that development work does not affect the traditional village way of life, which is the major draw among foreigners.
Proposed works include construction of water tanks, provision of sanitation facilities, information hoardings, lighting and improvement of connectivity to village. Retaining walls, if needed, will also be constructed.
