University lists priorities for growth

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has identified quality in education, e-learning, gene mapping and conservation of native germplasm, telemedicine and training for self-help groups as some of the thrust areas for its development.

Addressing reporters here on Saturday, new Vice-Chancellor P. Thangaraju said it would provide world-class veterinary education, besides conducting research and outreach programmes.

Weekend and evening classes would be organised for disciplines in demand such as pathology and microbiology.

Postgraduate diplomas and continuous professional development programmes on disease diagnostic techniques and clinical practices would be offered through the e-learning mode.

In collaboration with foreign institutions, the university proposed to offer joint degree programmes.

At present, 89 research programmes were being run. The budget for research projects was close to Rs.40 crore, and Rs.15 crore was expected from external funding.

Mr. Thangaraju said the university would come out with three hybrid pig varieties by January 2008. A good demand was expected, as they would yield more pork than the existing varieties and contain less fat.

Steps would be taken to establish a Southern Regional Bio-Security Laboratory in Tamil Nadu with the help of the Centre. Such a high-security facility was available only in Bhopal.

For the effective control of diseases in small ruminants such as sheep and goat, a disease diagnostic laboratory would be established in the southern districts. To prevent the loss of native birds, an Avian Germplasm Conservation Centre would be established at the Poultry Research Station at Nandanam. A national centre for canine research too had been planned.
