NEW DELHI: Resident doctors and interns at Safdarjung Hospital here called off their three-day-old strike on Saturday afternoon following an agreement with the hospital administration. The doctors had gone on strike after an on-duty physician was allegedly manhandled and threatened by the relatives of a patient. While senior doctors at the hospital had pitched in to take care of the heavy patient load, medical services including emergency were crippled causing much difficulties to patients. “Strike illegal”Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent J. Prasad said: “We are a public service institution and the strike was clearly illegal. We had issued notices to the doctors on strike asking them to come back to work. “We have looked into their problem and will be increasing the security here, while safe drinking water has been made available to them with immediate effect.” More cops sanctionedHe said the hospital has been sanctioned 36 Delhi Police constables who would now be part of the multi-layer security cover at the hospital. The spokesperson of the hospital, V. K. Dogra, said talks were on with the doctors and the hospital administration had assured them that all precautions would be taken to ensure that they have a safe work environment. Doctor threatenedMeanwhile, doctors at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital opted to stay off duty here on Saturday after a patient’s relative beat up a doctor. The strike, however, was called off in the evening, said Medical Superintendent A. K. Jena. “One of our doctors was threatened by the relatives of a patient on Friday night after which doctors here proceeded on strike. “We spoke to them and convinced them that adequate security will be provided.
