THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Any celebration organised in the name of Malayalam will become meaningful only if it succeeds in igniting in Kerala society a consciousness of its self, noted poet O.N.V. Kurup has said. He was speaking at the valedictory function of the Conference on Malayalam, on Saturday, organised here by the University of Kerala as part of its ‘Suvarna Keralam’ celebrations. One of the aims of setting up of universities in the State was the growth of Malayalam. However, even today, Malayalam is not getting the consideration due to it. In Tamil Nadu there is a sign in front of a university that reads, ‘Say that you are a Tamil and hold your head high.’ “Will it be permissible to put up something similar to this about Malayalam anywhere in Kerala? It is not regionalism that the Tamils exhibit, but a consciousness about their selves,” he said. Valsala Baby, the research guide for the doctoral thesis that won the University’s award for the best thesis in Malayalam, was felicitated on the occasion. A dance-drama programme ‘Amma Malayalam’ was also staged on the occasion.
