Congress bags top ZP posts

Vairamudi defeats his JD(S) rival by one vote in Ramanagara ZP polls

BANGALORE: The Congress won the elections to the posts of president and vice-president of the Ramanagara Zilla Panchayat here on Saturday.

C. Vairamudi, zilla panchayat member from Hosadurga in Kanakapura taluk, was elected president and Gayathramma of Thungani in Kanakapura taluk, was elected vice-president.

Mr. Vairmudi, who secured 11 votes, defeated his Janata Dal (S) opponent Ashok Kumar by one vote in the 22-member panchayat. One member was absent. Ms. Gayathramma, who also got 11 votes, defeated S.D. Nagaraju of the Janata Dal (S) who got nine votes. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Vairmudi said that he would do his best for the development of the new district. A meeting of zilla panchayat members would be called soon, he said.

Both the Congress and Janata Dal (S) have 11 members each in the zilla panchayat.

D.S. Bhujangaiah of the Janata Dal (S) who contested for the post of president last time did not turn up for voting, resulting in the Congress bagging the post. Later in the day, Mr. Bhujangaiah joined the Congress, increasing its strength in the House to 12.
