Bangalore
Bangalore: It was an evening rock fans in the city were waiting for, and they went home money and energy well spent. The performance by the Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura lived up to its billing. Dark clouds threatened to play spoilsport, but the weather held and the performance began with opening acts by Indian bands Slingshot and Brahma. The two bands put up a spirited performance to get the crowd warmed up. Sepultura finally took to stage after a little delay due to the sound system acting up. They began with one of their signature numbers “Refuse/Resist”. The fans of the band are called the Sepularmy and they were out in full force. Almost all of them had taken the effort to wear T-shirts featuring the band and had managed to rustle up banners and flags. The first number definitely got them in a headbanging frenzy. Thrash metal does not stand for delicate nuances of sound but for sheer power. It was quite evident here. Acclaim must be reserved for the ‘throat’ vocalist Derrick Green who judiciously used his enormous lung power. The young drummer Jean Dolabella, a recent addition to the band, did not disappoint. Old hands Paulo Pinto, the bassist and the lead Andreas Kisser were at their usual best as the band went through some more popular numbers such as “Troops of Doom”, “Territory”, “Arise” and “Roots Bloody Roots”. The band was a tight act and value for money, but the organisers disappointed with a sound system that was not up to mark. Mediapersons at the venue registered their protest as the organisers resorted to manhandling and verbally abusing photojournalists.
