White Paper on Sethu project sought

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Catalyst Trust has suggested that the Union Government come out with a White Paper specifically addressing all apprehensions about the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project.

In a memorandum to the committee of eminent persons, an abstract of which was released here, the trust said it would be possible for the people to decide whether the project was environmentally safe and financially viable only if adequate information was provided to them.

If the project was permitted to proceed with the factors not being addressed satisfactorily, it would lead to financial disaster and serious ecological damage. Hence, the Centre, in consultation with the Tamil Nadu Government, should issue a White Paper giving full details to allay apprehensions about economic viability, environmental and ecological sustainability, engineering feasibility and ethical acceptability of the project before deciding to proceed further with the implementation.
