SP candidate wins Lanji seat from jail
Staff Reporter
BHOPAL: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a jolt in Madhya Pradesh with the defeat of its candidate Dhyaneshwari Bhatere in the by-election to the Lanji Assembly constituency in Balaghat district on Saturday.
Samajwadi Party candidate Kishore Samrite wrested the seat from the BJP with a margin of 3,734 votes.
Mr. Samrite contested the election as an undertrial from jail and secured 28,779 votes against 25,045 votes polled by his nearest rival, Ms. Bhatere of the BJP. The BJP candidate failed to retain the seat, which fell vacant on the demise of her husband, Dilip Bhatere.
Mr. Samrite was behind bars for the last several months as he was being tried on charges of loot and arson.
The Lanji result also comes as a major eye-opener for the Congress party. Its candidate Bhagwat Bhau Nagpure came third and lost deposit as he polled only 11, 438 of the 80, 697 valid votes.
Along with Mr. Nagpure, 16 other contestants also lost their deposit.
The former M.P., Sukhlal Kushwaha, who had earlier broken away from BSP to form the Samanta Dal bagged only 1,311 votes.
