Pakistan is sinking, says Nawaz Sharif

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: The former Pakistan Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, left Dubai for Karachi by a commercial flight a few hours after President Musharraf declared a state of Emergency on Saturday.

Speaking on behalf of Ms. Bhutto, who had returned to Dubai on November 1, the president of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Dubai chapter, Akram Farooqui told The Hindu that the imposition of Emergency by General Musharraf was “totally unjustified.”

“We condemn the imposition of Emergency. It violates the human rights of the Pakistani people and will prolong their misery,” he said.

Earlier, Ms. Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari, who is stationed in Dubai told Reuters that the imposition of Emergency was “definitely not pleasant news, it’s not welcome news.” “We’re hoping to build institutions, not destroy them,” he observed.

The former Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, told Geo television over telephone from Saudi Arabia that General Musharraf was “part of the problem and not part of the solution.” He said, “Pakistan is sinking and the situation there is chaotic.” He added that in the present circumstances, all democratic political forces should work together to “save Pakistan.”
