MACAU: India took the kabaddi gold, beating traditional rival Pakistan 35-17 in the final match in the Asian Indoor Games that concluded here on Saturday. India finished sixth in the medals standings with a tally of nine gold, nine silver and ten bronze medals. Chess contributed the major chunk of India’s golden tally with five, followed by athletics at three. China topped the medals standing winning 52 gold, 26 silver and 24 bronze medals and was followed by Thailand (19-28-24) and Hong Kong China (15-9-11). India added two silver medals and three bronze medals on the final day, with the chess team finishing runner-up to China in team blitz competition and Sandeep Shukla winning the middleweight silver in the Thai martial art sport of muay. Muay, a rather unfamiliar sport for the Indians, also contributed three bronze medals on the concluding day with flyweight Albert Kujur, lightweight Mohammed Imauddin and light middleweight Balakrishna Shetty being the medal winners. Unbeaten recordIn kabaddi, India won all its league matches, including the one against Pakistan (41-21) before meeting the latter again in the gold medal match on Saturday. India beat Sri Lanka (40-11), Malaysia (65-22), Bangladesh (36-12), Japan (39-13) and Iran (27-10) in other round-robin matches. In chess, after having won five gold, a silver and a bronze till the team blitz competition, India had to settle for the second spot. China headed the table with 27 points followed by India, Kazakhstan and Vietnam on 22.5 points. India won more matches compared to the other two teams. The Indian team beat Iraq (4-0), Iran (3-1), Vietnam (2.5-1.5), China (2.5-1.5), Mongolia (3.5-0.5) and Qatar (2.5-1.5), but lost to Kazakhstan (1.5-2.5) and Malaysia (1-3) and drew with the Philippines. China suffered its only defeat against India.
