Krithika triumphs

Chennai: Pon N. Krithika, a student of Modern SSS, won the under-19 title in the CBSE National individual chess championship held here.

She scored six out of six, outplaying all her rivals.

J. Bavan Kumar (five points) of SRDK Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Chennai, finished runner-up.

D.S. Shashank of Jawahar Vidyalaya won the under-14 title with 5 points, while Siddarth of Chettinad Vidyashram, finished next best with 4.5 points.

SRDK Vivekananda Vidyalaya, with 18.5 points, won the team championship in the under-19 category while Modern SSS finished runner-up with 16 points.

Sun Beam School, Lahartara (Varanasi), with 14.5, was placed third. In the under-14 section, Lourdes Central School (Mangalore), with 19.5 points, won the team title.

Manuel Aaron, General Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, and Pushkar Vohra, AEO (Sports), CBSE, New Delhi, jointly gave away the prizes.

Final positions: Under-19: 1. Pon N. Krithikha (Modern SSS) 6; 2. J. Bavan Kumar (SRDK Vivekananda) 5; 3. Shikhar Pandey (Sunbeam School) 4.5; 4. P.P. Prachura (National Public School) 4; 5. Devvrat Tiwary (Maharishi Vidya Mandir) 4.

Under-14: 1. D.S. Shashank (Jawahar Vidyalaya) 5; 2. Siddarth (Chettinad Vidyashram) 4.5; 3. Natun Dasgupta (Indian High School, Dubai) 4.5; 4. Adith Jagadish (Lourdes Central School) 4.5.

Ramesh wins

K. Ramesh Babu defeated B. Radhakrishnan 25-21, 25-14 in the final of the YMCA Madras Esplanade open carrom tournament held recently.

Other results: Semifinals: B. Radhakrishnan bt K. Premkumar 25-17, 25-14; K. Ramesh Babu bt K. Balakrishnan 25-18, 25-12.
