ADILABAD: On the 58th Foundation Day of the Bharat Scouts and Guides movement on November 7, a withering Adilabad district unit will have nothing to look forward to as it comprises only 60 constituent units now. With a high of 300 units under its banner in the district, the movement had once regularly bagged awards for highest unit registrations in the State. Today it has only 60 registered units.“The certificate given to scouts and guides who attend camps at various levels are not valued like those of the NCC or sports. In addition, stoppage of allowance has discouraged not only students, but teachers too who function as Rovers”, said K. Ratnakar, district secretary of Bharat Scouts and Guides. The district unit is also handicapped because it does not have a proper premises .
The movement started in Adilabad district in 1966. It generated locally well-known personalities like the first secretary Ibrahim Quadri, T. Laxmaiah. “Our Colour Party had won an award for being the best at every national level Jamboree since the 1972 Asia-Pacific Jamboree held at Kagaznagar.
We also boast of over 50 Rashtrapati Puraskars besides 200 plus Rajya Puraskars ”, recalled Mr. Ratnakar. Teachers suggest inclusion of scouting activity in regular school curriculum .
