‘Tiny’ effort to bring change in society

Correspondent

‘Child reporters’ take initiative in development process

KORAPUT:

Of late, children play a key role in society. The yardstick of development is largely considered on the basis of the condition of children in the field of education, health and other matters. And the children of Koraput show the rest of the world that they too are engaged in the process of transforming Koraput district into a developed one, according to Prasant Kumar Das, DPC, DPEP/SSA.

Children could think, discuss and present their issues in front of elders and it was clearly exhibited at the block-level children’s congress being organised in the district. The children, popularly known as ‘child reporters’ have been brought together from different places in the district to facilitate them to discuss the present situation that prevails around them and to draw a line where they could participate in bringing the change, says Mr. Das. He was the chief guest at the first children’s congress at Doliambo of Semiliguda block in which child reporters from Koraput, Semiliguda, Pottangi and Nandapur blocks participated. Child reporters, with the support from UNICEF, SSA/DPEP and the civil society organisations, discussed various situations that they experience in school and discussed how they could extend their support in the school governance. Children need not be mute spectators in the process of development but could become a conscious partner of it, said Amarjit Jena, education officer from UNICEF.

The children took the decision that they would ensure their parents’ participation in the village education committee, PTA and MTA meetings of the school. Similarly children from Boipariguda, Kudura and Lamtaput gathered at Boipariguda on Saturday to discuss about the impact of social discrimination on children.
