THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A statue of Raja Kesavadas, Diwan of erstwhile Travancore who ushered in an era of development in the region in the 18th century, will be installed in the city. The Raja Kesavadas Foundation has initiated a project to install a 6.5 feet-high statue of the Diwan. The foundation has constituted a 11-member committee for the project. Former Deputy Speaker A.Nabeesath Beevi is the chief patron of the committee and MLAs V.Surendran Pillai and George Mercier are the patrons. The committee will be chaired by T.P.Sankarankutty. The committee is hoping to install the statue in 2008 to coincide with the birth anniversary celebrations of the Diwan. Raja Kesavadas was born at Kunnathoor in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. As Diwan, he was responsible for shifting the capital of Travancore from Padmanabhapuram to Thiruvananthapuram. He is also credited with the construction of the Chala market and port cities such as Alappuzha. Raja Kesavadas adorned the chair of Diwan for over a decade. It was during his tenure that the armed forces of Travancore thwarted an invasion by Tippu Sultan.
