Berhampur: With the onset of winter , over 20,000 winged guests have arrived at Nalabana Island in the middle of Chilika Lake to make it their temporary abode. They have arrived from places like the Capsian Sea, Lake Baikal, Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, remote parts of Russia, central and south-east Asia, Ladakh and the Himalayas and settled in the 15.53 square km at Nalabana. Though the migratory birds arrived in the lake, about a week ago, they have not ventured into the Nalabana bird sanctuary as the area was submerged under water, Abhimanyu Behera, divisional forest officer at Chilika wildlife division, said. Noted ornithologist U.N. Dev attributed the late arrival of avian species to erratic weather during the monsoon. Besides, Nalabana island, a large number of birds have also settled in other places including Sorana, Mangaljodi, Parikuda and Chadeihaga hills inside the vast lake. The most common species which arrived so far are flamingo, pelican, white ibis, spoonbill, Behera said. - PTI
