Awareness campaign to be conducted on AIDS prevention

Staff Reporter

Sensitisation workshop for headmasters held

Krishnagiri: Directorate of Teacher Education Research and Training, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society and UNICEF conducted a one-day sensitisation workshop on School Adolescent Education Programme for headmasters of government and private higher secondary schools in the district recently.

Inaugurating the workshop, Collector Santhosh Babu said the district administration would conduct intensive awareness campaigns among students on HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

To begin with, teams of master trainers would conduct 16 hours of structured co-curricular sessions on 10 components of life skills education for students studying in Std. VIII to Plus Two in Krishnagiri district.

Mr. Babu said that the life skills programme would focus on building effective communication skills, on resisting peer pressure to indulge in potentially hazardous behaviour, assertiveness, managing emotions and helps them develop good knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention and care so that they can have an accurate risk assessment to protect themselves.

The peer educators would be trained on how to communicate with peer groups on adoption of safe sexual practices and help them develop good knowledge about HIV and AIDS.

The peer educators would use pamphlets and puzzles on HIV/AIDS to create a supportive atmosphere for opening a dialogue. In addition, community leaders and parents are educated about the needs of adolescents to create a supportive environment for peer education.

The main objective of the programme is to encourage youth to indulge in safe behaviour and to create positive peer pressure to help them openly discuss AIDS, Mr. Babu added. UNICEF consultant P. Ganesamoorthi, Chief Education Officer Baskaran and other district officials participated.
