PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Sunday urged the Centre to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the seizure of a huge quantity of rice at the railway station here. The party’s local unit secretary A. Anbalagan told reporters that he had written to the Union Home Minister on Saturday requesting a CBI probe. PermitThe Food Cell police recently seized a consignment of 2,400 tonnes of rice being transported in 40 goods wagons to Bikkavolu near Kakinada on the ground that there was no valid permit issued by the competent authority, Mr. Anbalagan mentioned in his letter. He said enquiries revealed that 10,000 tonnes of rice had been transported from Puducherry to Assam and Bangladesh by a Bangalore-based agency in the last couple of months. For Central schemesThe seized consignment was the rice meant for Centrally-sponsored poverty alleviation programmes such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to be distributed through the Public Distribution System, he alleged. Responsibility“Both the government of Puducherry and the Railway administration should own responsibility for these misdeeds,” Mr. Anbalagan said. The Food Cell police of Puducherry would not be able to investigate the case in detail and bring the culprits to book in view of involvement of four States - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra - and the Union Territory of Puducherry, he added.
