Police get tough to check crime rate

Correspondent

CUTTACK: The Cuttack city police executed nearly 80 pending NBWs during the past 24 hours and forwarded at least 75 warrantees to courts on Friday. While the police maintain that it was part of their routine job, some sources said the city police launched a special drive to control crime in the silver city. Since the drive has come just within 24 hours of Gopal Chandra Nanda joining as new DGP, sources say Nanda being a hard taskmaster; the city police just under his nose cannot afford to be complacent. Mr. Nanda, after assuming the charge of the coveted post on Thursday, clearly indicated that putting a check on spurt in crime would be on the top of his agenda. It is learnt that the city police have devised an action plan to be offensive against anti-social elements that have posed a challenge to the force over these days. The city over the past few weeks witnessed an upsurge in crimes related to extortions, snatching, robbery and looting.

As part of the drive, the city police is also learnt to have prepared a list of active criminals and planning to launch a crackdown on them in the near future. The police are also systematically working on identifying the source of procurement of firearms and ammunition.

Cuttack Superintendent of Police Soumendra Kumar Priyadarshi on Thursday night instructed all the police stations of the city and its outskirts to execute the old NBWs pending in their thanas. “By Friday evening, 75 warrantees were arrested and forwarded to courts,” said the district police information bureau sources. The sources said barring two police stations in the city, all others executed the warrants including that of Jagatpur, Choudwar and Baranga police stations on the outskirts of the city.
