Stir for High Court Bench

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The members of Thiruvananthapuram Nagara Samrakshana Samithi have begun a month-long agitation demanding the constitution of a High Court bench in the capital city.

Just as the United Democratic Front Government had scuttled the move for the constitution of High Court bench, the Left Democratic Front too have turned a blind eye to the issue, the members of the Samithi alleged.

It was unfortunate that the capital city despite having two Members of Parliament, 14 Members of Legislative Assembly and a Minister was unable to make any progress in setting up the bench, a release jointly issued by Ananthapuri Manikantan Nair, general secretary of the Samithi, and Vallakkadavu Murali, chairman, High Court bench Action Council, stated.

According to the members, Kerala is the only State in the country the capital of which does not have a High Court bench. The political parties, irrespective of their ideologies, were only interested in using the issue as a pat of vote-bank politics.

All major developmental activities, including the modernisation of the Thiruvanathapuram airport and Vizhinjam harbour, were trapped in bureaucratic red-tapism, the statement said. A discussion on the ‘neglected capital city’ was also organised by the Samithi members.

The members of the Samithi would also conduct a token Satyagraha in association with the High Court Bench Action Council in front of the Secretariat on November 20. V.S. Sivakumar, president, District Congress Committee, would inaugurate the Satyagragha. .
