Tourism Department sanctions Rs. 2.8 crore

MADURAI: The ongoing tourism-related works in four Chithirai Streets around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here would be completed by March 31, according to M. Rajaram, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation.

The works include laying of eco-friendly paver blocks, underground ducts for cables, landscaping, beautification and storm water drainage, for which the Department has sanctioned Rs.2.8 crore.

“Corporation, which is executing the works, has been asked to expedite the works,” he told The Hindu here on Saturday. The civic body has also been asked to improve the sanitation at tourism hotspots.

Several tourism development works worth Rs.7.18 crore were under progress in the district at present, said Mr. Rajaram, who inspected the projects along with Collector S.S. Jawahar, Tourist Officer K. Dharmaraj and other officials.

Terming foreign tourists as a “new segment,” he said that they were interested in Indian culture, tradition and folk arts. The village of Kallu Uthu (near Chatrapatti), which has a perennial pond and surrounded by hills, was also being considered as a potential tourist spot. “District administration has carried out some works. We are seeing what more could be done,” he said.

About 4 crore tourists had visited the State this year thus far, of whom 3.92 crore were foreigners. About 41 lakh tourists had visited Madurai this year since January, of whom foreigners numbered 2.24 lakh.
