MYSORE: A glut of cabbage in Mysore has triggered a collapse in its price causing despair among farmers. The price of a kg of cabbage, which used to be around Rs. 8 a kg, has now come down to Rs. 3 to Rs. 4 a kg. Farmers, who were thrilled over the bountiful harvest of cabbage in the wake of good rain the region, are now wearing creases over their forehead. The fall in the price of cabbage has been so steep that the farmers are finding it difficult to even recover the cost of transporting the produce from the fields to the market. Horticulture Department officials attributed the collapse in prices of cabbage to the prevailing glut. “It is seasonal. The supply has outstripped the demand. It is natural for the prices to collapse. But, the prices will stabilise in the next fortnight,” Deputy Director of Horticulture Department, Mysore, Shanmukhappa told The Hindu. About 10 truck-loads of cabbage used to arrive at the Wholesale Vegetable Market at RMC Yard on Sayyaji Rao Road in the city every day. But, since the last one week, 15 to 20 truck loads of cabbage are being unloaded. Mounds of cabbage are piling up in the market with an estimated arrival of 150 to 170 tonnes of the produce being unloaded every day. However, president of the Mysore City Wholesale Fruits and Vegetable Vendors’ Association Ravishankar clarified that the farmers were not dumping the produce, dissatisfied over the collapse of prices.
