KOLLAM: The Congress high command will take a political decision on the reinduction of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader K. Karunakaran in the party, said All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Mohsina Kidwai here on Sunday. Talking to reporters, Ms. Kidwai said this being the situation, she would not like to elaborate on the issue. Ms. Kidwai said she had high regard for Mr. Karunakaran. UPA’s purposeLater, inaugurating the valedictory function of a leadership camp organised by the Kollam District Congress Committee, she said the task of the Congress was to redeem the nation from communalism. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was created for the purpose. The constituents of the UPA are extending support for this purpose. She said the UPA Government had announced various development and welfare schemes for the people. It was the responsibility of the State governments to implement the schemes. Congress workers should ensure that these schemes reached the genuine beneficiaries. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala; DCC president Kadavoor Sivadasan; and party leaders M.I. Shahnavas, K.C. Rajan, Thalekunnil Basheer, Sooranad Rajashekaran and Shahida Kamal; among others, spoke. Meanwhile, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said a decision on Mr. Karunakaran’s return to the Congress would be taken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. He was taking to presspersons after calling on the ailing RSP(B) leader Baby John. Foreign airlinesHe said steps were being taken to permit foreign airlines to operate from the Karipur airport. Things would hopefully start working in this connection from April 1, the Minister added. Later, addressing the leadership camp of the Kollam DCC, he accused the CPI(M) of adopting double standards. It did not oppose the U.S.-China-Pakistan alliance, but was opposed to the Indo-U.S. alliance in the form of a nuclear deal. India had maintained a strong relationship with the erstwhile Soviet Union. Healthy tiesHowever, this did not result in India becoming a slave of the USSR. It was a healthy relationship. The Indo-U.S. nuclear deal also means such a relationship, he said. Mr. Ravi said the “diatribe” unleashed by CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan against the Thamarassery Bishop was with the deliberate calculation of appeasing the Hindu communal forces.
