VISAKHAPATNAM: CPI district secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy launched a padayatra in the agency area on Sunday emphasising tribals’ rights on the forest and opposing bauxite mining.
Beginning his 11-day yatra from Sapparla, he warned the Government against causing any harm to girijans in the name of mining.
The padayata will conclude at Rachapalli.
Demanding that the Government drop the proposal for mining, Mr. Murthy said that the Government would benefit only two per cent from it whereas the private companies involved in mining would corner the lion’s share.
He wanted the government to come clean on the permission given for mining.
Environmental hazards
Besides affecting the girijans, the environmental hazards would be grave, he said.
Calling for opposition to the mining from all sections, he urged that the girijan culture should also be saved.
A 15-member team is participating in the yatra that began from Galikonda and Ammavari Darakonda, along with Mr. Murthy.
The local problems would also be gathered during the yatra and submitted to officials for redress.
