‘Save Amanikere’ campaign in Tumkur

Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR: The Tumkur District Bio-diversity Panel and its students’ chapter at Byraveshwara High School, here on Sunday, began a campaign to save the Tumkur Amanikere.

Launching the “Save Tumkur Amanikere” campaign, president of the panel, K. Dorairaj, said the lake, Tumkur Amanikere, was the biggest lake in the district. Its preservation was crucial as it was the only “lung-space” available for the fast-growing Tumkur city. Prof. Dorairaj said the lake served as a natural habitat for many rare species. Thousands of birds of different varieties visited the lake every year, and had been doing so for several decades.

Earlier, over 500 students of Byraveshwara High School took out a procession shouting slogans in favour of preserving the Amanikere.
