Seat of wisdom: A view of Vallalar Temple at Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam District. NAGAPATTINAM: Thousands of devotees throng ‘Medha Dakshinamurthy’ (Guru Bhagawan) at the ancient temple of Gnanambika samedha Vathanyeswarar Temple or popularly known as Vallalar temple in Mayiladuturai in Nagapattinam district during ‘Guru Peyarchi.’ This year the transit falls on November 15. Laksharchana for Guru Bhagawan is being performed in connection with the Guru Peyarchi. This year, Lord Guru Bhagawan (Jupiter) transits from Vrichika Rasi (Scorpio) to Dhanusu Rasi (Sagittarius). Special abishekam and pujas will be performed to the deity in the presence of Sri-la-Sri Shanmugha Desika Gnanasambanda Paramacharya Swamigal, the 26th Guru Maha Sannidhanam of Dharmapuram Adheenam, Mayiladuturai. The Dharmapuram Adheenam Mutt, is also conducting a two-day special `Guru Maha Yagam’ and pujas in the temple in connection with the `Guru Peryarchi.’ The temple attracts devotees from all over the places to fulfil their ‘prarthanas’ and offer prayers. The temple is situated on the northern bank of river Cauvery in Mayiladuturai and the majestic river with the beautiful Rishabha Mandapam in the middle attracts the pilgrims. The main deity called Lord Vathanyeswarar in Sanskrit is popularly known as Vallalar in Tamil. ‘Medha Dakshinamurthy’ (Guru Bhagawan) shrine is situated on the southern side of the sanctum sanctorum. ‘Medha’ means wisdom or `Gnanam.’ Here, Guru Bhagawan (Jupiter) is seen in a sitting posture with His right hand in ‘chinmudhra,’ the left hand is seen holding a book to teach the devotees. The unique feature of the deity is that the Lord is seated on the Nandhi offering ‘upadesam’ to Rishaba Deva who is seated in front. Besides, the presiding deity of ‘Medha Dakshinamurthy,’ there is an ancient bronze idol of ‘utsavamurthy’ of the Lord which is used to taken in a procession on a silver ‘Kailasa vahanam’ on the new moon day in the Tamil month of Aipasi (October-November). On the same day, Goddess Ganga Devi is also taken out on a crocodile mount. It is believed that the Ganges flows into Cauvery at Mayiladuturai during the Tamil month of Aipasi. According to legend, Rishaba Deva felt proud that he was above all as he was carrying Lord Siva on his back. The Lord coming to know of it, wanted to teach him a lesson. One day, He just placed a strand from the matted hair of His head on Rishaba Deva. Unable to bear its weight, Rishaba Deva felt crushed and immediately realised his mistake. He prostrated before the Lord and sought his pardon. The Lord not only pardoned him but also initiated him into the mysterious divine wisdom. Hence, when the Lord took the form of Guru Bhagawan or Gurumurthi, Rishaba Deva was permitted to serve as his mount.
