UPA will complete term: Antony

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Defence Minister A.K. Antony has said that in the changed political scenario, it appears that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government will continue in power and be able to complete its term.

He was inaugurating the delegates’ session of a leadership camp organised by the Kollam District Congress Committee here on Sunday.

Mr. Antony said people had recognised the need for the UPA government to continue in power. Under the UPA rule, India was emerging as one of the powerful economies in the world. The people had learnt many bitter lessons from the rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government.

He said Kerala had benefited much from the UPA rule. This was reflected in the mood of the people towards the Centre. Earlier, anti-Centre agitations were popular in the State but of late, people’s participation in such agitations had come down. Political parties might call anti-Centre agitations but these were not getting the support of the people.

He called upon his party colleagues to further strengthen the Congress. He said the people had become aware that without the Congress, the country would be in peril. He wanted the political agenda of the party to be decided after fully understanding the social needs of the State.

Earlier, Mr. Antony called on ailing RSP(B) leader Baby John at the latter’s residence here.

Talking to journalists there, Mr. Antony said India was carefully watching the situation in Pakistan. He said that India desired a politically stable Pakistan. That would be good for either. He expressed hope that the problems in Pakistan would soon be resolved. At the same time, India had taken the required precautionary measures in view of the situation across the border.
