Move to improve hygiene in medical colleges

Shastry V. Mallady

MADURAI: The State Government has initiated steps to improve hygiene and sanitation in all government medical colleges and hostels following the “Stanley Medical College Hospital episode” in Chennai in September which affected several students.

An order to this effect has been issued as a quick step to focus on ‘environmental sanitation’ in all government hospitals, medical colleges and their hostels by involving government departments and officials concerned.

The first meeting of professors of community medicine departments in eight government medical colleges in the State will take place here on November 6 to discuss the ways to improve sanitation, prevent outbreak of diseases and control mosquitoes.

S. Elango, Additional Director of Public Health, who has been assigned the task of monitoring the condition of hygiene in medical colleges in Madurai and Theni districts, told The Hindu on Saturday that the community medicine departments in medical colleges had been asked to play an active role in fever surveillance and send data regularly to the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and also to the Director of Medical Education.

Sanitation committees

Through the latest G.O., the Health Department has also constituted Environmental Sanitation Committees in districts under the chairmanship of District Collectors.
