Flawed policy

The article “‘Greening India’ but losing forests” (Nov. 2) effectively exposes the fallacy of the afforestation policies being pursued by the government. Recent reports of pest attacks on acacia plantations in the Western Ghats bring out the dangers associated with the naïve practice of compensatory afforestation. The government should realise that while the practice can increase the “forest cover,” it cannot bring back the native fauna that will be destroyed once the last vestiges of our natural forests are allowed to be steamrolled by the developmental juggernaut.

Girish Prahalad,

Bangalore
