JAMMU: Political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed concern over the developments in Pakistan. The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, described the imposition of emergency in Pakistan as “unfortunate.” He told journalists that a democratic Pakistan was in the interest of India, as it would help resolve outstanding issues between the two nations. Dr. Abdullah, however, did not criticise Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf. Terming the imposition of emergency in Pakistan as an inopportune happening, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed hoped that the present crisis would be a temporary phenomenon and democracy would soon return in that country. Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik said political instability in Pakistan was bad news for the people of the State. Separatist leader and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani said this had brought the army and Pakistan people in direct confrontation with each other.
