Farmers stand to get between Rs.4 and Rs.4.50 a coconut under the drive. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerafed has been authorised to act as the nodal agency for the coconut procurement scheme being launched by the State government. This was decided at a meeting of officials convened by Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran here on Friday to finalise the modalities for procurement, a release said. In the first phase, coconut will be procured from Kollam, Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts. The procurement will be done through the samithis selected by the Kerafed. Self-help groups, kudumbasree units and the cooperative societies which had in the past procured coconut will also be considered for the scheme. The final list of such selected group will be prepared by the Kerafed, the release said. The principal agricultural officers in each district will supervise the procurement scheme. The district deputy directors will be given special charge of the scheme. The release said the progress of the procurement scheme would be reviewed every week.
