Plea to deploy health inspectors

Police told to check harassment against women

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Residents associations have urged the city corporation for urgent steps to check the proliferation of street vendors at the Medical College junction.

Participants in the monthly meeting organised by the medical college and museum police stations under the Maithri Suraksha community policing programme here on Sunday highlighted the menace caused by the vendors who spill out onto the roads causing inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists alike. They appealed to the corporation to deploy health inspectors for a crackdown on unauthorised trade.

They called upon the police for measures to check harassment against women and the nuisance caused by public consumption of liquor at the Plamoodu bridge and the area adjoining the TPJ Road.

Residents in the museum police station limits highlighted the anti-social activities in deserted section of the road adjoining the Government College for Women at Vazhuthacaud. They said parked autorickshaws were often used for shady activities. Residents also highlighted the need to enforce the operation of fare meters by autorickshaws. The meeting called for a ban on the use of high-decibel fireworks in residential areas after midnight during the Deepavali celebrations. Officials stress ed the need to discourage women from flaunting gold ornaments. They warned that it led to an increase in crimes.

Museum Circle Inspector of Police Najmul Hassan, Sub-Inspectors N. Muraleedharan Nair, R. Mohandas and V. Krishnan and Maithri Suraksha convener Thekkumoodu Sumesh were among those who participated.
