In the absence of well-laid, well-maintained storm water drains most of the unevenly-laid roads in Saibaba Mission area were water-logged in the downpour on October 22. The inundation was most pronounced on Bharati Park Road No.1, between Thadagam Road and Raja Annamalai Road junctions, where half the road was under water. Power supply disruptions and speeding vehicles added to people’s woes. Coimbatore gets limited rain. But when it rains, it transforms the city into hell. Underpasses get water-logged, flyovers become big bottlenecks for vehicular traffic and roads, most of them with potholes, become unfit for use. The Government should urgently take measures to harvest rainwater and prevent it from inundating low-level areas. K.D.Viswanaathan, Coimbatore. Codissia fairI went to the Codissia consumer fair recently. The organisers of the fair collected an entry fee of Rs. 30 but it was not mentioned in any advertisements. Children below the age of 15 had free entry but that was not mentioned in the ticket counter. So all, including the children, bought the tickets but the person at the entrance asked us to get refund if the children were below 15. Why didn’t the organisers mention it specifically? They also collected a parking fee of Rs. 10 for four wheelers but I think the parking space was temporarily arranged by levelling the ground at the side of the hall. But owing to heavy rain the whole place became slushy and many cars got stuck in the wet soil. The organisers should have made better arrangements. B. Sujatha, Malumichampatti. Salem divisionSalem railway division has become a reality now. More importantly, Coimbatore junction has become an integral part of it. The railways should now provide the much-needed amenities to the people of Coimbatore. Though Coimbatore station is an important station and has Rs. 100 crore annual revenue the station lacks many facilities. The sixth platform in broad gauge is yet to function fully. Long-pending projects like the Irugur-Coimbatore north doubling as well as the gauge conversion of Coimbatore-Podanur junction metre gauge line should be completed quickly so that trains coming to Coimbatore junction need not lose time. This will pave way for trains skipping Coimbatore and running non-stop in Podanur too to enter Coimbatore junction. Also, Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express 6609/6610 should be introduced at the earliest. Ravi. S, Saibaba Colony. Cracker banNow that Diwali is round the corner, authorities should make it clear if loud bursting of crackers is banned. If so, a warning should be given to the public to refrain from such celebrations. The police should also tell the public not to use roads for lighting firecrackers which will endanger lives of road users. Pratap Gokuldas, R.S. Puram.
