Andhra Pradesh
I could not get a gas connection when I moved from Gudivada to the city a couple of months ago. After many unsuccessful attempts to get a connection in a lawful manner, I understood that bribery has become a part of the common man’s life. People are paying bribe, though unwillingly, to get their work done. For instance, the officials at Municipal Corporation issue certificates such as ‘no ration card’ if one pays just Rs. 50. Similarly, a gas cylinder is available for Rs. 500 and 10 litres of kerosene for Rs. 300 in black market. I feel that black marketing and corruption can be reduced if the procedures are simplified. T. Vijay Vijayawada Disturbing trendThe Association for India’s Development (AID) conducted a survey among the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) at the recent TANA conference in Washington, DC. According to the survey findings, 81 per cent of the NRIs had paid bribes to get thing done in India. It relates to NRIs from Andhra Pradesh and the story is the same with respect to NRIs from other States as well. Bribe is a dirty word here and the sophisticated expression is ‘formality’. It is absolutely a disturbing trend, which may lead to dire consequences if unchecked. H. Kalyan Rao Guntur Broken promisesCommon man is used to being promised many things by politicians and later forgot by them. But, a Congress delegation led by Government Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy conveniently forgot the promise made to Jnanpeeth awardee Mahasweta Devi during their visit to Nandigram. They assured to provide an ambulance to Nandigram village within a few days of returning to Hyderabad. Their visit to Nandigram helped them to lash out at the Left parties, but the fate of ailing people in Nandigram and the promise made to Jnanpeeth awardee still remains unimplemented. Bharati Sankaramanchi Machilipatnam No respectSome of the government officials hardly have any respect towards the judiciary, which is one of the four estates of the society. It was evident recently in the case of Sri Durga Malleswara Swami Temple. The third metropolitan magistrate issued a non-bailable warrant to executive officer S. S. Chandrasekhar Azad for his failure to attend before the court in connection with a petition filed about poor quality of prasadam. The court also dismissed his absent petition filed through his advocate, on the grounds that the executive office had shown scant respect towards judiciary. It is high time the government gave necessary directions to the officials in this regard. A. Satyavathi Vijayawada Clarify standThe Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is all set to hike the property tax for non-residential buildings in the city. The ruling Congress remained a mute spectator to the developments without any concern for people. People are now worried that the VMC would enhance the property tax for residential buildings also. More so, Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar did not clarify whether the newly revised rental values or rental values fixed in 2001 are applicable to the new assessments. The ruling party and VMC officials concerned need to clarify in this regard. A. Janardhana Rao Vijayawada
