TAMBARAM: A 32-year-old driver was drowned in a water-filled stone quarry when a lorry that he tried to park somewhere else plunged into the quarry at Erumaiyur near Tambaram on Saturday.
Police said Ganesan had brought a lorryload of stone from a quarry at Naduveerapattu to the stone-crushing unit near the abandoned quarry at Erumaiyur around 7 p.m. on Saturday.
There was another lorry parked near the unit. Hence, Ganesan got down from his vehicle and tried to move the parked vehicle elsewhere .
Eye witnesses said that soon after he turned on the ignition, the lorry started rolling back immediately. Ganesan was unable to control the vehicle.
The quarry, abandoned about eight years ago, was filled with water. Though personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services Department came to the spot, they were unable to help.
It was difficult to retrieve the body, let alone pull the vehicle out, considering the depth of water, firemen said. Even on Sunday afternoon, workers at the crushing unit and the firemen were waiting for huge cranes to be deployed at the spot.
Workers said stone quarrying was stopped and only some crushing units were functioning at Erumaiyur. Stones brought to these units came mostly from quarries in the nearby Naduveerapattu village.
