Kingfisher begins daily flight from Chennai to Port Blair

to tap other

tourist hot-spots

PORT BLAIR: Kingfisher Airlines has announced the launch of a new daily service between Chennai and Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as plans to expand its network to tap other tourist hot-spots in the country.

“Our plan is to provide greater connectivity to places that have previously not been considered,” V. Raja, Global Sales Head, Kingfisher Airlines, said here on Friday. “There will be a huge growth in this market once accessibility increases. Places like these islands have everything to offer to people in the mainland. All that is missing is the packaging.”

The new service to Port Blair, which began on October 28, leaves Chennai at 4.30 a.m. and the return flight leaves Port Blair at 12.15 p.m. The airline’s new A321 aircraft, customised for economy class with 200 seats, will be used.

Mr. Raja said the airline decided to introduce the service after examining the traffic by its competitors and observing a “considerable demand.”

Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, JetLite, Spicejet and Simplifly Deccan currently operate daily flights from Chennai and Kolkata. Mr. Raja said the airline expected a load factor of 80-85 per cent in the peak travel season, and 60 per cent in the lean season, between June and September.

The fare is Rs. 11,000 (taxes apply) for a return trip. However, it will vary depending on the season and the demand. “In the lean season, between June and September, one can expect a tactical fare with a 20 per cent discount to stir up travel,” Mr. Raja said.

He said the airline was seeking to provide greater connectivity to areas with “tourism potential.” It recently launched flights to Surat and Kandla.

The airline also planned to link up with Kingfisher Holidays, part of the United Breweries group, to provide packages to develop traffic in these sectors.

The group is seeking to develop its own resort at Agatti in Lakshadweep, where the airline flies four times a week.
