TIRUPATI: The computer-savvy employees would not have expected that their IT skills would send them behind bars.
While suspicion on irregularities in the Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS) had been in the air for quite some time, the same assumed a new dimension with some employees going to the extent of painting a rosy picture and showing heaven on earth, all with the help of Information Technology that landed them in trouble.
And it happened very much in Valmikipuram constituency in Chittoor district, represented by none other than the Chief Whip N.Kirankumar Reddy.
The District Collector S.S. Rawat fired ten employees from service, including the mandal technical assistant Damodaram, computer operator Sudarsanam besides ordering criminal action against the perpetrators.
The issue came to light when a hue and cry was raised over the allegedly fake bills presented for payment to the Government for mango plantation works taken up under the EAS. Though no pits were dug up and saplings planted, everything appeared on paper, thanks to Photoshop software. These photographs, which were attached to the bills as proof of the work having been completed, helped in catching the culprits. It may be recalled in this context that a section of politicians had raised objections over the conduct of social audit some time back that lent credence to the suspicion that “all is not well” in the mandal.
