Paying rich tributes: Secretary of the State unit of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha Manappa Naik inaugurating a function to mark Valmiki Jayanthi in Shimoga on Monday. SHIMOGA: The State secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha, Manappa Naik, said here on Monday that the contribution of Maharshi Valmiki in unravelling the Ramayana was outstanding. Speaking as the chief guest at the “Valmiki Jayanthi” organised at the district office of the BJP, he said that members of the Valmiki community were proud to be the followers of the spiritual leader. He said the fact that the Ramayana was still considered the most authentic epic spoke of Valmiki’s scholastic abilities. He said Valmiki had been accepted as the main source of inspiration by the members of the community. SignificantMr. Naik said the contribution of the community to the freedom struggle was significant. He said that Venkatappa was one of the prominent leaders who participated in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. There was a need to publicise their contributions, he added. Mr. Naik said that there were nearly 65 lakh people belonging to the Valmiki community in the State. State BJP Secretary M.B. Bhanu Prakash, district BJP president Girish Patel and district secretary of the morcha Sudhamani were present on the occasion.
