SANKAGIRI: A team of police personnel seized 170 bags of rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System (PDS) and arrested two persons for smuggling the rice near here on Sunday.
Acting on a tip off, the team conducted vehicle check up near here and intercepted a mini-lorry proceeding to Erode. They arrested lorry driver Kannan (21) of Periya Melapalayam and Vijayakumar (31) of Sankagiri in this connection. The rice was being smuggled to Karnataka from Erode district, police said.
Killed in accidents
A 34-year-old-man was killed when a private bus dashed against a motorcycle in Ethapur near Attur on Sunday. Police said Aasaithambi, who was running a furniture shop in Peddanaickanpalayam was on his way to Ethapur, when the accident took place. In another accident in Salem, a man was killed and another sustained injuries in a road accident here on Sunday.
Police said Ganesan (33) and his father Ezhumalai were travelling in a motorcycle, when the vehicle lost control and dashed against a roadside tree. They were admitted to the Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital. Ganesan succumbed at the hospital on Monday.
