KANCHEEPURAM: The Kanchipuram Handloom Silk and Lace Saree Manufacturers Association has urged the State Government to expand the domain earmarked for usage of Geographical Index mark for Kancheepuram silk saris.
At present, products manufactured by handloom weavers residing in Kancheepuram Municipal area alone are considered as Kancheepuram silk saris under the GI mark regulations. But, thousands of weavers engaged in silk sari manufacturing are living in nearby rural areas such as Thenambakkam, Nathapettai, Iyyampettai and other villages coming under Kancheepuram Tahluk and Uthiramerur Tahluk in Kancheepuram district, in Arakonam Tahluk in Vellore district and in Cheyyar Tahluk in Tiruvannamalai district, said the association president, Y.M.Narayanasamy.
Talking to reporters here recently, Mr.Narayanasamy said the recession suffered by this industry during last decade and urbanisation that swept the town during that period had forced the weavers shift their residence-cum-weaving units to nearby rural local body areas.
In order to save the handloom silk sari weaving community, the association had suggested that villages located within 15 km radius from Kancheepuram town limit should be included in Geographical Index mark domain, Mr. Narayanasamy said.
