NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over the recent rape and murder of a call centre employee in Pune allegedly by the cab driver, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM) in India has suggested that the Government make installation of global positioning system (GPS) mandatory in all the cabs being employed by industries where women work in night shifts.
ASSOCHAM secretary-general D. S. Rawat said installation of GPS in cabs would help provide fool-proof security to the women workers. “Installation of GPS in all pick-and-drop vehicles would help in monitoring their movements and check any diversion,” he said.
Mr. Rawat said the Govt. should make installation of the GPS mandatory not only for call centre cabs but also in the vehicles of other industries where wom worked in late night shifts. According to ASSOCHAM estimates, there are nearly 7,500 vehicles involved in ferrying workers in Delhi and other neighbouring cities. In all, there are nearly 30,000 such vehicles in which GPS should be installed.
